Updating Dokuwiki required me to change the settings of the data folder. The only way I could manage was to make sure that there was a group policy to allow writes and THEN change the group recursively. Changing the group first locked out chmod changes, and trying to chown to the web user failed through both ssh as well as running directly as the web user.
